Mayor Wright Housing | Honolulu Magazine

Matt Mallams and I photographed a family living in public housing hell at Mayor Wright Homes in downtown Honolulu, with gang activity, rat infestations, bed bugs, and until a year ago no hot, running water. We spent time with Frances Wong and her many adopted children she's taken into her home, made friends with the neighborhood kids playing at the playground made of old tires, explored the grounds of the housing project, and met with the lawyer, Victor Geminiani, that has been helping the community of Mayor Wright. We felt sympathy for the people we met and sad to hear that when we were working on this story for Honolulu Magazine, neighbor TJ "Tipuk" Mori was stabbed after an argument that night, we went to his memorial service the following day. We hope this article can bring some change to their living conditions.

Electronic Shark Defense System | Hana Hou! Magazine

As an ocean swimmer who's always got sharks on my mind, I was thrilled to meet and photograph surfer/inventor Wilson Vinano Jr., the creator of the Electronic Shark Defense System (ESDS), underwater for Hana Hou! The Hawaiian Airlines Magazine.
How it works is the 'ESDS omits electric waves that interfere with the gel in a shark’s nose and keeps them away from those individuals in the ocean. The ESDS pulses are easily detected by a shark in the vicinity, causing them to stay out of the signal range.'

Twigonometry | Hana Hou! Magazine

I had the pleasure of photographing the incredible, whimsical outdoor sculpture 'Into the Wild' made from interwoven twigs and branches by environmental sculptor Patrick Dougherty and volunteers at Maui's Makawao Hui No'eau Art Center for Hana Hou! The Hawaiian Airlines Magazine.  I am so inspired by Dougherty's vision and was honored when he asked to use my photographs in future lectures about his work. Go check out his curiously, beautiful woven-wood sculptures.
